It sounds like you are looking for somethign pretty modest that just works for you to access your media. I've used Boxee, I've used PS3 media server, tversity, Kodi, Front Ends for media access for the car etc. It has better codec support with more audio options. It looks a lot more like some of the Kodi skins. It was based on the older Plex Home Theater (which is no longer supported) The layout is substantially better (in my opinion).
OpenPHT is a fork of plex that was designed by the team that created Plex for the Raspberry Pi (Rasplex). I don't know of a solution that is quite that simple, but as someone previously pointed out.Kodi has a LOT of options, it's open source so there are endless possibilities however, the tradeoff is quite a bit of work has to go into it once you start customizing the install, and then potential compatibility issues for different skins etc. Unless I misunderstand what you are looking for.you don't want somethign you have to do a lot of 'tinkering' with. Click to expand. For one, I don't think the Kodi solution is for you.
